Tato norma popisuje horizontální metodu detekce a současně stanovení nízkých počtů presumptivních Escherichia coli pomocí techniky nejvýše pravděpodobného počtu (MPN), založené na kultivaci v řadách tří, popř. pěti zkumavek. Metoda zahrnuje detekci tvorby plynu a indolu po kultivaci při selektivní teplotě 44 °C.
