Da die Nachfrage nach geeigneten Kriterien für die brandschutztechnische Beurteilung bestehender Gebäudeteile ständig zunimmt, hat sich der Autor intensiv mit den historischen deutschen Brandschutz-Standards ab der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts beschäftigt. Er erörtert Möglichkeiten für die Bezugnahme auf heutige Bestimmungen des bautechnischen Brandschutzes sowie auf einschlägige Standards und schließt damit die Lücke zur aktuellen DIN 4102-4 "Brandverhalten von Baustoffen und Bauteilen". Der zweite Band der fünfbändigen Reihe "Baulicher Brandschutz im Bestand" enthält die historischen Normfassungen der DIN 4102, die für eine Beurteilung bestehender Gebäude ab 1934 wichtig sind.
