1. Scope |
1.1 This practice provides guidelines helpful in achieving repeatable and reproducible results when evaluating the ability of a separator system to separate two immiscible liquids of differing densities using a single-pass, constant-rate, nonsolids test. The separator system may consist of any device in which porous media aids in separation. Separators relying totally on mechanical means for separation have not been considered. The test requires separator performance to reach a quasi-steady-state. Absorbent or adsorbent devices may not satisfy this requirement. 1.2 This practice requires the use of standard liquids that are reproducible in nature, such as distilled water, and organic compounds, or liquids that can be made reproducible in their chemical and physical properties. 1.3 This practice allows the use of only a globe valve as the dispersion producing means. Separation efficiency is a function of the size distribution of the dispersed phase. A reproducible dispersion is produced using standard liquids and consistent dispersion-producing means. The globe valve is throttled to produce a dispersion similar to a centrifugal pump-produced dispersion. 1.4 This practice addresses only separation efficiency. No solid contaminant is used; therefore, life is not considered. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. |
