This specification covers the general requirements and testing procedures for wick (Type I), rope (Type II), and braided (Type III) fiberglass packing used for boiler, furnace, and other high-temperature equipment seals. The material used for construction shall be a continuous, high-density-type ETG fiberglass material. Asbestos and other asbestos-containing components are disallowed. Each type of packing shall be manufactured according to the manufacturer´s design, as follows: Type I shall be composed of twisted plied strands made into braids; Type II shall be laid up into the general form of a wick; and Type III shall be a loosely twisted rope. Unless otherwise specified, packing shall adhere to the dimensional values provided herein.

1.1 This specification covers the general requirements and tests for braided, rope, and wick fiberglass packing used for boiler, furnace, and other high-temperature equipment seals for service temperatures up to 1000°F (538°C). 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
