Norma platí pro zhotovování a rozměry prvotních svitkových mikrofilmů s negativním zobrazením na halogenidostříbrném neděrovaném filmu a šířce 16 mm a 35 mm. Nevztahuje se na mikrofilmy COM. Norma popisuje hlavní rozměry, požadavky na skladbu a jakost a kontrolní metody. Informační přílohy 1 až 3 uvádějí hodnoty meze čitelnosti na mikrofilmech dalších generací, doporučené hodnoty optických hustot pozadí na mikrofilmech v závislosti na vlastnostech obrazových předloh a klíčová slova. Norma společně s ČSN 01 3840 plně nahrazuje ČSN 01 3812 a ČSN 01 3816 z 4.9.1978.
