Norma platí pro konstrukci uzavíracích ventilů kovových tlakových lahví s plnicím přetlakem do 20 MPa, a stanoví jejich rozměry. Podle ČSN 07 8600 jde o ventily k láhvím např. na argon, helium, krypton, nanon, kyslík, neon, vodík, methan, dusík, vzduch, ethylen, helium + kyslík, oxid uhličitý, oxid uhličitý + kyslík, oxid dusný, cyklopropan a řadu dalších směsí vzácných plynů s jinými plyny. ČSN 07 8631 byla schválena 25.5.1987 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.10.1988. Nahradila ČSN 07 8631 z r.1971. "Změnou a)-3/1989" se s účinností od 1.5.1989 mění údaje v tab. č. 1, 2 a 3. "Změnou b)-1/1990" se s účinností od 1.3.1990 provádí v normě drobná změna. "Změnou c)-4/1991" se s účinností od 1.7.1991 provádí v normě několik zněn zejm. v tab. 1 a 3
