Tato norma obsahuje základní ustanovení a shromažďuje podklady potřebné pro navrhování větracích a klimatizačních zařízení, která upravují prostředí pro pobyt osob. Jsou to systémy určené k úpravě tepelného a vlhkostního stavu prostředí i k úpravě čistoty ovzduší, včetně systémů, které odvádí škodliviny z emisních procesů (metabolických emisí, emisí ze stavebních materiálů, vnitřního vybavení i z výrobních procesů) ve větraných a klimatizovaných prostorech. Tato norma se nevztahuje na systémy určené k úpravě prostředí v dopravních prostředcích, systémy určené pro funkci technologických a obdobných zařízení v prostorech místností (např. pro čisté prostory) a pro technologické procesy uvnitř uzavřených linek. Pro tyto systémy se doporučuje použít obecné zásady uvedené v této normě
