V této normě jsou zapracovány údaje z ISO 229:1973. Norma platí pro všechny druhy obráběcích strojů na kovy se stupňovitou změnou otáček (koncepce s převodovou skříní a asynchronním elektromotorem) a stanoví řadu jmenovitých a mezních hodnot otáček a posuvů jejich pracovních orgánů (výstupních členů). Norma neplatí v těch případech, kdy použití uvedených řad by bylo technicky neodůvodněné (např. u strojů s plynulou změnou otáček a posuvů nebo pro řezání závitů apod.). Tato norma není závazná podle § 3 zákona č. 96/1964 Sb., o technické normalizaci. ČSN 20 0006 byla schválena 17.4.1991 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.10.1992. Nahradila ČSN 20 0006 z 13.1.1962 a ČSN 20 0007 ze 4.1.1962
