Norma platí pro zkoušení motorových paliv, petrolejů, technických benzinů a kapalných aromatických uhlovodíků. Zkouška je určena k stanovení sirných sloučenin, které jsou nejen nežádoucí z technologického hlediska, ale současně i zdrojem nepříjemného zápachu. Podstatou zkoušky je vytřepání vzorku s roztokem olovnatanu sodného a posléze i práškové síry. Přítomnost merkaptanů nebo sirovodíku se posuzuje vizuálně, podle změny barvy jedné z fází. Postup přípravy i provedení zkoušky je podrobně popsán. ČSN 65 6174 byla schválena 27.10.1971 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.7.1972. Nahradila ČSN 65 6174 z r.1952
