Norma platí pro stanovení extrahovatelných látek ve vodě metodou infračervené spektrometrie. Metoda je vhodná pro všechny druhy vod. Mez stanovitelnosti závisí na objemu extrahovaného vzorku a na typu použitého přístroje. Pro objem vzorku 2 litry je při použití běžného spektrometru mez stanovitelnosti obvykle 0,02 mg/l, při použití spektrometru FTIR (Fourierova technika infračervené spektrometrie) je mez stanovitelnosti 0,015 mg/l. Spektrometrií v infračervené oblasti spektra se za podmínek určených touto normou stanoví řada nepolárních, slabě polárních a polárních organických látek, které ve své molekule obsahují vazby C-H. V porovnání s postupem založeným na gravimetrické metodě může stanovení extrahovatelných látek provedené metodou infračervené spektrometrie poskytovat pro některé typy vzorků velmi odlišné výsledky.
