Tato norma určuje metodu pro stanovení termotolerantních (fekálních) koliformních bakterií a Escherichia coli. Metoda může být použita pro stanovení termotolerantních (fekálních) koliformních bakterií ve všech typech vod kromě těch, u nichž přítomnost nerozpuštěných látek ruší filtraci nebo vysoký počet jiných organismů inhibuje růst stanovovaných bakterií. Pro stanovení Escherichia coli je metoda určena zejména pro povrchovou vodu, kdy nadměrný růst doprovodné mikroflóry znemožňuje použití metody podle ČSN EN ISO 9308-1 a kdy zároveň nelze použít metodu nejpravděpodobnějšího počtu dle ČSN EN ISO 9308-3 (zejména při nižších počtech E. coli ve vzorku).
