Norma popisuje výpočetní model ke stanovení celkové ekvivalentní pohltivé plochy nebo doby dozvuku uzavřených prostorů v budovách. Výpočet je založen zejména na změřených údajích charakterizujících zvukovou pohltivost materiálů a objektů. Výpočty jsou možné pouze v kmitočtových pásmech. Norma popisuje principy výpočetního modelu, uvádí důležité veličiny a stanovuje jeho použití a omezení. Je určena akustickým odborníkům a poskytuje rámec k tvorbě aplikovaných dokumentů a nástroje pro další uživatele v oboru stavebnictví při respektování místních zvyklostí. Model je založen na zkušenostech s predikcemi pro místnosti v bytech a kancelářích, pro společné prostory domů, jako jsou schodiště, chodby a místnosti obsahující stroje a technické vybavení. Norma není určena pro velmi velké prostory nebo prostory nepravidelného tvaru, jako koncertní síně, divadla a továrny.
