Správně fungující obal má velký význam pro distribuci a ochranu zboží. Nedostatečný nebo nevyhovující obal může vést ke zničení a ztrátě obsahu v balení. Norma vychází z ISO 10653:1993. Doporučené průměry se vztahují k rozsahu objemů uvedených v příloze A (informativní) této normy. Tato norma stanovuje rozsah objemů plechovek vymezených svými jmenovitými užitnými objemy, jejichž tloušťka plechu nepřevyšuje 0,49 mm. Jemné kovové obaly pro tekutiny sycené plynem vymezené svými jmenovitými objemy plnění jsou řešeny v jiné evropské normě.
