Tato evropská norma specifikuje požadavky na působení tlumičů nárazu během nárazů vozidla. Dále stanovuje funkční třídy a kritéria přijatelnosti nárazových zkoušek, které by měly být uvažovány ve shodě s EN 1317-1 a EN 1317-5. Tato norma specifikuje funkční úrovně vyžadované od tlumičů nárazu pro zachycení a/nebo přesměrování narážejících vozidel. - Prudkost nárazu vozidel při kolizi s tlumiči nárazu se klasifikuje pomocí indexů Nárazové rychlosti teoretické hlavy (THIV) a indexu prudkosti nárazu ASI (viz EN 1317-1). - Různé funkční úrovně umožní národním a místním orgánům stanovit funkční třídu tlumičů nárazu. - Je nutno upozornit na skutečnost, že odsouhlasení tlumiče nárazu vyžaduje jak úspěšné provedení řady nárazových zkoušek, tak dodržení celé normy
