Tato evropská norma stanoví přímo nebo odkazem požadavky na karty používané ve zdravotní péči, v úhradách za zdravotní péči nebo při sledování oprávněnosti k poskytování zdravotní péče. Tato evropská norma stanoví fyzikální charakteristiky karet a záznamové techniky, ale nestanoví bezpečnostní požadavky. Norma definuje oblasti na obou stranách povrchu karty, které se přidělují jednotlivým typům médií. Zkušební postupy používané v této evropské normě jsou definovány v ISO/IEC 10373.
