Tato norma platí pro olověné baterie se jmenovitým napětím 12 V používané především jako napájecí zdroje pro startování spalovacích motorů, pro svícení a také pro pomocná zařízení spalovacích motorů vozidel. Tyto baterie se nazývají startovací baterie. Do rozsahu této normy patří také baterie se jmenovitým napětím 6 V s tím, že všechna zmiňovaná napětí musí být pro baterie o napětí 6 V dělená dvěmi. Tato norma platí pro baterie pro osobní automobily a nákladní a průmyslová vozidla a neplatí pro baterie používané k ostatním účelům, například pro motocykly a pro startování spalovacích motorů drážních vozidel
