Norma popisuje experimentální postupy a postupy výpočtu relativního indexu tepelné odolnosti izolačního materiálu z experimentálních dat získaných postupy uvedenými v IEC 60216-1 a IEC 60216-2. Postupy výpočtu uvedeného v této normě doplňují postupy výpočtu z IEC 60216-3. V normě je rovněž uveden návod pro hodnocení tepelného stárnutí na základě jednoteplotní zkoušky s pevně stanovenou dobou bez extrapolace. Norma obsahuje 4 informativní přílohy s návodem pro použití Fisherova a Studentova testu, tabulkou sloužící k přiřazení jednotlivých tepelných tříd možným hodnotám relativního teplotního indexu, statistickými tabulkami, návodem k použití počítačového programu a návodem a kritérii pro výběr referenčního EIM.
