Tato mezinárodní norma se zabývá impulzními průraznými zkouškami ve vzduchu keramických a skleněných izolátorů třídy B (viz IEC 60383-1): talířových, roubíkového typu (včetně roubíkových podpěrek) a tyčových izolátorů třídy B. Tato norma se může použít i pro zkoušky izolátorů třídy B z jiných materiálů (např. polymerů a kompozitů). Může být ale účelné zvážit podle toho potřebu úpravy zkušebního postupu. Tato norma je vydána se záměrem specifikovat normalizované postupy zkoušek izolátorů průrazným impulzním napětím ve vzduchu. Jsou uvedeny postupy jak pro typovou tak i pro výběrovou zkoušku.
