Norma je návodem pro hodnocení bezporuchovosti spojovacích prvků a pasivních součástek vláknové optiky. Je určena k tomu, aby se používala pro všechny typy spojovacích prvků s optickými vlákny a pro pasivní optické součástky. Mezi ně se zahrnují mimo jiné pasivní součástky používané ke spojování, odbočování, spínání, minimalizaci odrazů, řízení výkonu a útlumu, kompenzaci disperze, modulaci a rozdělování vlnových délek a filtrování. V budoucnu se do nich mohou zahrnout také spojky. EN má 3 strany anglického a IEC 33 stran anglického a francouzského textu, ČSN pak 21 stran textu
