Tato norma specifikuje minimální požadavky na provoz a funkci, metody zkoušení i požadované výsledky zkoušek zařízení, vyhovujících funkčním normám, které přijala Mezinárodní námořní organizace IMO v příloze 2 rezoluce IMO MSC.74(69) nazvané Doporučení k funkčním normám pro systémy řízení dráhy. Norma kromě toho bere v úvahu rezoluci IMO A.694(17), se kterou je svázána ČSN EN 60945. Pokud požadavky této normy se liší od požadavků ČSN EN 60945, požadavky této normy mají přednost. Norma též bere v úvahu rezoluci IMO MSC.302(87) o ovládání výstrahy z můstku (BAM)
