Účelem této části normy je poskytnout definici transportního profilu založeného na IrDA, který je určen pro komunikaci mezi zdravotnickými přístroji, které využívají infračervené bezdrátové propojení jako fyzickou vrstvu. Navazuje na ISO IEEE 11073-30200, která specifikuje fyzickou vrstvu pro kabelové propojení. Norma dále podporuje používání v případech, kdy komunikace probíhá s osobními přístroji, jako jsou například PDA a AP sítě, jenž podporují IrDA - infračervenou komunikaci.
