Tato norma specifikuje metodu stanovení odstranitelnosti a biologické rozložitelnosti organických látek aerobními mikroorganismy. Zkušební podmínky popsané v této normě simulují podmínky při biologickém čištění odpadních vod. Pro zkoušku lze použít dva systémy: model aktivace nebo model v porézní nádobě. Zkoušky lze volitelně provést za podmínek nitrifikace a denitrifikace a jako spřažené zařízení. Tuto metodu lze také použít ke stanovení biologické rozložitelnosti nebo odstranitelnosti organických látek (dále "zkoušená látka") v odpadní vodě.
