Norma specifikuje metody hodnocení odolnosti materiálů nebo výrobků proti vlhké atmosféře obsahující oxid siřičitý. Tyto metody jsou použitelné ke zkoušení kovů a slitin, kovových a jiných anorganických povlaků i organických povlaků. Norma nahrazuje ČSN EN ISO 3231 (67 3096) z listopadu 1998 a ČSN ISO 6988 (03 8130) z listopadu 1994. Sloučením obou norem, z nichž jedna platila pro zkoušení nátěrů a druhá pro zkoušení materiálů a kovových a anorganických povlaků, vznikl jednotný dokument s obecnou platností. Nově jsou zařazeny přílohy B (kontrola funkce komory) a C (doplňující informace)
