Tato norma specifikuje postup pro výpočet cetanového indexu středních destilátů paliv ropného původu. Vypočítaná hodnota se nazývá "cetanový index stanovený rovnicí o čtyřech proměnných", zkráceně "cetanový index". Tuto normu je možno použít pro paliva obsahující neropné deriváty z dehtových písků a břidlic. Není použitelná pro čisté uhlovodíky ani paliva získaná destilací z uhlí. Výpočet cetanového indexu nebere v úvahu vliv aditiv používaných ke zvýšení cetanového čísla
