Norma popisuje použití zkoušek mikrotvrdosti podle Vickerse a podle Knoopa na kovové a jiné anorganické povlaky. Tuto metodu lze použít např. u elektrolyticky vyloučených povlaků, autokatalytických povlaků, stříkaných povlaků a anodických oxidových povlaků na hliníku. Měření lze provádět kolmo k povrchu povlaku nebo na příčném řezu.
