Norma specifikuje soubor stupňů přípravy ocelových povrchů po odstranění nebo částečném odstranění znečišťujících látek rozpustných ve vodě, rzi, předchozích nátěrů a jiných cizích látek vysokotlakým tryskáním vodou. Různé stupně jsou definovány slovními popisy spolu s fotografiemi, které jsou reprezentativními příklady v rámci tolerancí pro každý slovně popsaný stupeň. Norma specifikuje jednak výchozí stavy povrchu, jednak stupně bleskové koroze po očištění, které jsou rovněž slovně popsány spolu s reprezentativními fotografickými příklady.
