Norma specifikuje destruktivní metodu měření místní tloušťky kovových a jiných anorganických povlaků na výbrusu rastrovacím elektronovým mikroskopem. Tato metoda je použitelná pro povlaky o tloušťce do několika milimetrů, pro takové povlaky o velké tloušťce je však obvykle praktičtější použít světelný mikroskop. Dolní mez tloušťky závisí na dosažené nejistotě měření. Tuto metodu lze použít i pro organické povlaky, jestliže při přípravě výbrusu ani působením elektronového paprsku při zobrazení nedojde k jejich poškození
