Tato norma je směrnicí pro volbu způsobů ochrany kovů a slitin proti atmosférické korozi. Je využitelná pro technická zařízení a výrobky zhotovené z konstrukčních kovů, které jsou provozovány v atmosférických podmínkách. Pro racionální volbu způsobů ochrany je jedním z důležitých činitelů korozní agresivita atmosférických prostředí. Tato směrnice vychází z klasifikace korozní agresivity definované v ISO 9223. Volba vhodného způsobu protikorozní ochrany se skládá z více kroků, respektujících charakteristiky výrobku, jeho požadovanou provozní životnost a další požadavky spojené s jeho využitím - korozní prostředí a další činitele mimo vlastní korozní systém, např. cenu (náklady)
