Účelem této části ISO 12637 je poskytnout definice v českém jazyce vycházející z nové terminologie dané touto normou v anglickém jazyce. Záměrem této části ISO 12637 je stanovení základní terminologie vyvolané obrovskými změnami, které s sebou přinesly digitální postupy/metody v oblasti grafické výroby. Rozlišování mezi reprografickými a tištěnými reprodukcemi předloh, založené především na kvalitativních kritériích, bylo nahrazeno předpokladem, že veškeré metody reprodukce grafických předloh lze považovat za tiskové postupy.
