Tato norma stanoví funkce síťových protokolů, které souvisí s IPv6 komunikací mezi dvěma nebo více ITS stanicemi komunikujícími prostřednictvím celosvětové komunikační sítě Internet. Předpokládá se, že čtenář této normy je obeznámen s IETF specifikacemi. Tato norma nedefinuje nový protokol, novou výměnu zpráv v IPv6 vrstvě nebo nové datové struktury. Norma definuje, jakým způsobem jsou normalizované protokoly IEFT zkombinovány, aby spolu mohly ITS stanice komunikovat s použitím rodiny protokolů IPv6. Postupy ke sdílení informací mezi IPv6 vrstvou a dalšími komponenty architektury ITS stanice jsou definovány v ISO 24102. Kromě požadavků stanovených v této normě je poskytnuto i množství poznámek a příkladů k ilustraci konfigurace IPv6 adresování a IPv6 mobility managementu
