Mezinárodní norma ISO 296 byla vypracována technickou komisí ISO/TC 39 Obráběcí a tvářecí stroje. Tato mezinárodní norma zavádí tři skupiny kuželů podle jejich velikosti a dále uvádí rozměry stopek jak v metrické soustavě, tak i v soustavě palcové. Velikosti 140 a 180 metrických stopek byly vypuštěny, naopak norma zavádí stopky Brown & Sharpe v palcové soustavě. Stopky v palcové soustavě jsou opatřeny závity typu UNC. Norma stanovuje i rozměry drážek a děr nutných pro provedení s vnitřním přívodem chladiva. Touto normou se nahrazují ČSN 22 0410 z 1970-01-01, ČSN 22 0411 z 1970-01-01, ČSN 22 0414 z 1970-01-01, ČSN 22 0415 z 1970-01-01, ČSN 22 0420 z 1970-01-01, ČSN 22 0421 z 1970-01-01, ČSN 22 0424 z 1970-01-01 a ČSN 22 0425 z 1970-01-01.
