V této normě je popsána architektura otevřeného distribuovaného managementu (ODMA). ODMA poskytuje architekturu pro specifikaci a vývoj jak managementu systémů jako otevřené distribuované aplikace, tak managementu otevřených distribuovaných aplikací. Architektura ODMA též poskytuje základní strukturu architektury pro vývoj norem potřebných v této architektuře. Architektura ODMA je v souladu s referenčním modelem otevřeného distribuovaného zpracování RM-ODP, takže se management systémů OSI může v distribuovaném prostředí používat v kombinaci s jinými technikami, které jsou navrženy a implementovány v souladu s principy otevřeného distribuovaného zpracování.
