S rozvojem informačních technologií a komunikační infrastruktury se otevřela možnost implementovat elektronický obchod do všech oblastí ekonomiky. Důležitou technikou, která přidává do těchto komerčních aplikací bezpečnost, jsou digitální podpisy. Digitální podpisy jsou nástrojem pro zajištění integrity dat a autentizace účastníků elektronických transakcí. Nejdůležitější vlastností digitálních podpisů v tomto kontextu je, že osoba, která podepsala daný dokument, nemůže tuto skutečnost popřít. ČSN ISO/IEC 15945 definuje služby TTP, nutné na podporu aplikace digitálních podpisů za účelem nepopiratelnosti vytvoření dokumentů. Definuje rovněž rozhraní a protokoly, které mají umožnit interoperabilitu mezi entitami přidruženými k těmto službám TTP.
