Dieser Teil von IEC 61131 legt die Technologie einer digitalen Punkt-zu-Punkt-Kommunikationsschnittstelle für kleine Sensoren und Aktoren, SDCI (allgemein bekannt als IO-Link TM3) fest, die die herkömmlichen Schnittstellen digitaler Ein- und Ausgänge nach Definition in IEC 61131-2 um eine Punkt-zu-Punkt- Kommunikationsverbindung für den Austausch komplexer Daten in beide Richtungen erweitert. Diese Technologie ermöglicht zudem die Übertragung von Parametern an Devices und die Übermittlung von Identifizierungs- und Diagnoseinformationen von den Devices zum Automatisierungssystem. Diese Technologie ist hauptsächlich für einfache Sensoren und Aktoren in der Fertigungsautomation vorgesehen, die kleine, kostengünstige Mikrocontroller einsetzen. Dieses Dokument legt die SDCI-Kommunikationsdienste und das SDCI-Kommunikationsprotokoll (Bitübertragungsschicht, Sicherungsschicht und Anwendungsschicht nach dem ISO/OSI-Referenzmodell) sowohl für die SDCI-Master als auch für die SDCI-Devices fest. Dieses Dokument umfasst weiterhin EMV-Prüfanforderungen.
