Dieser Teil von IEC 61300 beschreibt ein Verfahren zur Messung der Abweichung und der Reproduzierbarkeit der Einstellung der Dämpfungswerte eines einstellbaren optischen Dämpfungsgliedes (VOA, en: variable optical attenuator). Es gibt zwei Regelungsverfahren für VOAs, und zwar die manuelle Regelung und die elektrische Regelung. Dieses Dokument ist sowohl für die VOA-Regelungsverfahren als auch sowohl für Einmodenfaser- als auch für Mehrmodenfaser-VOAs anwendbar. Bei elektrisch geregelten VOA sind mitunter die Hysteresekennwerte der Dämpfung für VOAs maßgeblich. Die Hysteresekennwerte können wie in Anhang B angegeben gemessen werden.
