Dieses Dokument legt die grundsätzlichen Anforderungen für die Installation von Signalträgern für Kommunikationsnetze in Industrieanlagen sowie innerhalb und zwischen Automatisierungszellen fest. Dieses Dokument behandelt symmetrische Kupfer- und optische Signalträger. Es deckt auch die Verkabelung für drahtlose Signalträger-Systeme ab, nicht jedoch das Medium Wireless selbst. Zusätzliche Medien werden in IEC 61784-5 (alle Teile) abgedeckt. Diese Norm ist eine Begleitnorm zu den Kommunikationsnetzen der Automatisierungszellen und speziell zu den in IEC 61158 (alle Teile) und IEC 61784 (alle Teile) beschriebenen Kommunikationsnetzen. Zudem deckt dieses Dokument die Verbindung zwischen der anwendungsneutralen Kommunikationsverkabelung, beschrieben in ISO/IEC 11801-3, und der speziellen Kommunikationsverkabelung einer Automatisierungszelle ab, wobei eine industrielle Datenanschlussdose (AO) den informationstechnischen Anschluss (TO) der ISO/IEC 11801-3 ersetzt.
