Diese Norm vereinheitlicht im Rahmen des digitalen Austausches von Geo-Daten die semantische Klassifikation von Geo-Objekten sowie von deren Attributen und legt die dazugehörigen Strukturen fest. Sie bedienen sich dabei der Werkzeuge und Struktur von GML für die codierte Übermittlung von strukturierten Geo-Daten mit geometrischen und semantischen Bestandteilen. Die ÖNORM A 2261 entspricht dem Anwendungsbereich der Naturbestandsdaten. Naturbestandsdaten beschreiben in der Natur erkennbare Objekte, die im großmaßstäblichen Bereich zwischen 1:200 und 1:1000, oft auch bis 1:5000 von Interesse sind. Sie dienen als Grundlage für die Leitungsdokumentation, für die kommunale Verwaltung, für Planungen und Projektierungen, für die Bauamtsverwaltung und dergleichen mehr. Von hauptsächlichem Interesse sind dabei Objekte im Erdniveau, bzw. jene Teile von derartigen Objekten, die aus dem Erdniveau herausragen.
