Diese ÖNORM ist eine Überarbeitung des erstmals im Jahre 1982 veröffentlichten Auszugs aus der Gesamtausgabe der Internationalen Dezimalklassifikation (DK). Dabei wurden die in den von der FID (Fédération internationale dinformation et de documentation) herausgegebenen "Extensions and Corrections to the UDC" enthaltenen Änderungen und Ergänzungen bis einschließlich Serie 14, Nr. 2 berücksichtigt. Die rund 1500 Notationen umfassen alle Gebiete des menschlichen Wissens und dienen der Ordnung und Erschließung sowie dem Wiederauffinden (Retrieval) von Dokumenten jeglicher Art.
