Diese ÖNORM legt Anforderungen an die Raumakustik fest für (a) Räume, in denen eine gute Hörsamkeit - insbesondere Sprachverständlichkeit - gesichert werden soll, z. B. Veranstaltungsräume, Unterrichtsräume; (b) Räume, in denen die Lärmminderung das primäre Ziel ist, wie Produktionsräume, aber auch solche Räume, in denen außerdem eine ausreichende Verständlichkeit von Gesprächen (auch telefonischen) notwendig ist, wie Büroräume sowie andere Räume, in denen eine Lärmminderung angestrebt wird, wie z. B. Stiegenhäuser und Gänge, Kindergärten, Schwimm- und Sporthallen, Gaststätten. Nicht behandelt werden Räume, in denen außerordentlich hohe Anforderungen an die akustischen Verhältnisse gestellt werden, z. B. Opernhäuser, Konzertsäle, Tonaufnahmestudios.
