Diese ÖNORM legt, in Übereinstimmung mit IEC-Publikation 38, die wichtigsten Begriffe für Netzspannungen, Betriebsmittel und Übergabestellen fest. Sie regelt neben den Bahnnetzen vor allem die Drehstromnetze über 1 kV und deren Betriebsmittel. Auch im Bereich der Nennspannungen unter 120 V Wechselspannung und unter 750 V Gleichspannung ist es gelungen, mit dieser internationalen Norm aus einer Menge von rund 300 Einzelwerten 16 Vorzugswerte der Spannungen auszuwählen.
