Diese ÖNORM ist für feste Brennstoffe nach ÖNORM M 7104 anzuwenden. Die Verfahren nach dieser Norm dienen zur Bestimmung des Gehaltes an Wasser, Asche und flüchtigen Bestandteilen der in Abschnitt 1 der Norm genannten Brennstoffe. Die Bestimmung gibt Aufschluss über die Zusammensetzung der Rohsubstanz, die aus der Brennstoffsubstanz und den Ballaststoffen Wasser und Asche besteht. Der Gehalt an flüchtigen Bestandteilen dient zur Kennzeichnung des Inkohlungsgrades der Kohle, weiters zur Beurteilung der Verbrennungseigenschaften.
