Diese ÖNORM ist generell anzuwenden, wenn eine Staubkonzentration über 20 mg/m3 (bezogen auf wasserfreies Gas von 0°C und 1013 mbar) in einem durch einen definierten Querschnitt einer Leitung strömenden Gas bzw. Gasgemisch bestimmt und der zu erlangende Meßwert für die Beurteilung der Staubemission einer Anlage oder die Kalibrierung eines kontinuierlich messenden Staubkonzentrationsmeßgerätes verwendet werden soll. Für die Messung von Staubkonzentrationen bei hohem Unterdruck in der Leitung, hoher Temperatur des Trägergases, hoher Wasserkonzentration des Trägergases oder hohem Anteil korrosiver Komponenten im Trägergas wird eine weitere ÖNORM erarbeitet werden (ÖNORM M 5861-2). Für die Messung niedrigerer Staubkonzentrationen ist eine Europäische Norm in Ausarbeitung.
