Diese ÖNORM beschreibt ein Verfahren für die Bestimmung des Chemischen Sauerstoffbedarfes (CSB) in Wasser, das anwendbar ist auf Wässer mit einem CSB zwischen 30 mg/l und 700 mg/l. Der Chlorgehalt darf nicht über 1000 mg/l liegen. Wasserproben, die diesen Anforderungen entsprechen, können direkt analysiert werden. Der nach dieser Methode bestimmte CSB eines Wassers kann als ungefähres Maß für den theoretischen Sauerstoffbedarf - das heißt, für den Sauerstoffverbrauch bei der vollständigen chemischen Oxidation der organischen Inhaltsstoffe zu anorganischen Endprodukten - angesehen werden.
