Es werden theoretische und praktische Erkenntnisse über die Schmierung von Wälzlagern durch Fettschmierung, Ölschmierung oder Feststoffschmierung angeführt. In Abschnitt 4 sind die Grundlagen der Schmiertheorie dargelegt. In Abschnitt 5 sind die Richtlinien zur Auswahl der Schmierstoffaufbringung angegeben. Da Fett die häufigste Art der Wälzlagerschmierung ist, sind eine Übersicht über die Fettarten sowie Auswahlkriterien, Schmierfristen und Fettmengen für verschiedene Lagerbauarten, Druckzahlen und Temperaturen angegeben. Ölschmierung ist erforderlich, wenn die Drehzahlgrenze für Fett überschritten wird und eine Wärmeabfuhr notwendig ist. Für die Ölauswahl sind die nötigen Formeln angegeben. Feststoffschmierung ist eine Ergänzung der konventionellen Schmierstoffe, wenn diese allein ihre Funktion nicht mehr erfüllen. Abschnitt 6 gibt Konstruktionshinweise und der Anhang Viskositätswerte für Syntheseöle.
