Zielsetzung dieser ÖNORM ist die ordnungsgemäße Behandlung von Abfällen aus dem medizinischen Bereich zur Vermeidung einer Gefährdung von Personen durch Verletzung, Infektion oder Vergiftung und zur Vermeidung einer Umweltgefährdung. Diese ÖNORM ist von allen Personen anzuwenden, die mit der Erzeugung und mit dem Umgang (Bereitstellung, Sammlung, Transport, Zwischenlagerung, Verwertung und Entsorgung) von Abfällen aus dem medizinischen Bereich befasst sind sowie von Gewerbetreibenden aus dem Kosmetikbereich. Diese ÖNORM ist nicht auf radioaktive Abfälle anzuwenden, es sei denn, dass diese Abfälle nach strahlenschutzrechtlichen Bestimmungen wie inaktive Abfälle entsorgt werden dürfen.
