Ziel dieser ÖNORM ist es, die Entsorgung des radioaktiven Abfalls so zu gestalten, dass der von der Gesamtmenge des radioaktiven Abfalls endzulagernde Anteil möglichst gering gehalten wird. Damit sollen vorhandene oder zukünftige Zwischen- bzw. Endlager für radioaktiven Abfall aus ökologischen und ökonomischen Gründen möglichst nur jenem Teil des Abfalls vorbehalten sein, welcher langlebige Radionuklide enthält. Abfälle mit kurzlebigen Radionukliden können im allgemeinen durch ausreichendes Abklingenlassen der Radioaktivität und anschließende Behandlung wie inaktiver Abfall entsorgt werden.
