Diese Norm legt ein Farbcodierungssystem als Zweitmethode zur Identifizierung des Inhaltes von Gasflaschen für Industriegase, Atemgase und Gase für die medizinische Verwendung mit besonderem Verweis auf die Eigenschaften des Gases oder des Gasgemisches fest. Diese Norm gilt nicht für Flaschen, welche Flüssiggas (LPG, en: Liquefied Petroleum Gas) oder Gase zur Verwendung als Kältemittel enthalten, oder für tragbare Feuerlöscher sowie stationäre Löschanlagen. Die Farbkennzeichnung von Flaschenbündeln wird in dieser und anderen Normen nicht behandelt.
