Festgelegt werden Prüfbedingungen und Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Kühlleistung von Kühlbalken oder ähnlichen Systemen mit freier Konvektion (ohne erzwungenen Luftstrom). Das Verfahren zur Bestimmung der örtlichen Luftgeschwindigkeit und der Temperatur unter dem Balken ist ebenfalls enthalten. Ziel dieser Norm ist es, vergleichbare und reproduzierbare Produktkennwerte zur Verfügung zu stellen. Das Prüfverfahren gilt für sämtliche Bauarten von Kühlfächensystemen mit unterschiedlichen Medien für den Energietransport. Es wird grunsätzlich Wasser als Kühlmedium herangezogen, es kann jedoch bei den Prüfungen auch jedes andere Kühlmedium verwendet werden. Bei Luft als Transportmedium darf diese Luft nicht in den Prüfraum gelangen.
