Der vorliegende Teil der Norm legt ein Bezeichnungsystem fest, welches Anwendung auf Aluminiumlegierungen und Vorlegierungen findet, die in den entsprechenden Normen festgelegt sind. Es handelt sich um einen Beschreibungscode, der hauptsächlich auf den chemischen Symbolen beruht. Er gilt für Masseln und Gussstücke. Ein alternatives numerisches Bezeichnungssystem ist in EN 1780-1 festgelegt. Die Schreibregeln für die chemische Zusammensetzung sind in EN 1780-3 festgelegt. Ein Bezeichnungssystem für unlegiertes Aluminium ist in EN 576 festgelegt.
