Diese ÖNORM beschreibt ein Verfahren zur empirischen und konventionellen Bestimmung des biochemischen Sauerstoffbedarfes in unverdünnten Wasserproben. Das Verfahren ist für Wässer geeignet, deren biologischer Sauerstoffbedarf größer als 0,5 mg/l ist, aber 6 mg/l nicht überschreitet. Der biochemische Sauerstoffbedarf wird als jene Massenkonzentration an gelöstem Sauerstoff definiert, die durch biologische (hier biochemische) Oxidation von organischen und/oder anorganischen Wasserinhaltsstoffen unter den Untersuchungsbedingungen verbraucht wird.
